01 · A WELL-ESTABLISHED TRADITION OF EDUCATION

Establishment and Development

The foundations of Giresun University Faculty of Education were laid in 1962 with the opening of the three-year Boarding Teacher Training School for Girls. The institution continued its mission of training teachers under changing educational models and institutional structures in different periods.

The institution was transformed into a four-year Primary Teacher Training School in the 1973-1974 academic year, and its status was changed again in the 1974-1975 academic year. During this period, education and training activities were conducted jointly by the three-year boarding and day Giresun Teacher Training High School and the two-year boarding and day Giresun Institute of Education.

Following the closure of Giresun Teacher Training High School in the 1978-1979 academic year, the institution continued its activities as Giresun Institute of Education; in the 1979-1980 academic year, the boarding section of the Institute of Education was discontinued.

Giresun Institute of Education, which operated under the Ministry of National Education until 1982, was affiliated with the Fatih Faculty of Education at Karadeniz Technical University and transformed into Giresun School of Education pursuant to Decree-Law No. 41, which entered into force on 20 July 1982.

In accordance with the decision of the Council of Higher Education dated 23 May 1989, the duration of study at Giresun School of Education was extended to four years beginning with the 1989-1990 academic year.

Under Law No. 3837, adopted on 3 July 1992 and published and brought into force on 11 July 1992, Giresun School of Education was renamed Giresun Faculty of Education of Karadeniz Technical University.

Following the establishment of Giresun University on 17 March 2006, the Faculty became affiliated with Giresun University and began conducting its education and training activities as Giresun University Faculty of Education.
